The DUDU Method
The DUDU method of swaddling basically involves four steps. It’s: 1) down, 2) up, 3) down; and 4) up. You're going to start with a square-shaped blanket or swaddling cloth. The upper corner should be folded down before you begin. Your baby’s head should be placed above this portion of the blanket or cloth.
The whole idea behind swaddling is to secure your baby in the warm embrace of the blanket or cloth, so you begin with the first step (which is taking the left portion of the blanket or cloth and folding downward over the baby’s shoulder while simultaneously immobilizing their right arm at their side). Don’t be afraid to firmly tuck your little one in their modern burlap swaddle because they’ll wiggle free if you don’t. You will secure the side you just folded around their waist.
Then, you will sweep the bottom corner of the blanket upward. You don’t need this portion of the blanket or cloth to be tight. It’s okay for the baby's legs to move about.
For the last step, you are going to take the right portion of the blanket or cloth and move it downward and in, over the baby's left shoulder (and keeping your baby's arm at his or her left side). When to Swaddle
If you are a beginner to swaddling, you should swaddle your baby when they’re calm or asleep. When you become more accustomed to swaddling (and when your baby is used to the routine too), you can quickly swaddle them when they’re awake.
